7 years later we fill a crowded room with poetry, art, positivity, and we open our lives up in an effort to be free of whatever has been weighing us down. I love that so many people who never shared on the mic before chose our space to break their silence. Verbal Slap represents Connecticut with so much strength and the content of their poems educate and connect with everyone who listen. Thank you Face, M.I.D.N.I.G.H.T., Proverbs, Croilot, and Frederick Douglass for using your poems to inspire, bringing your fire, and dropping your passion in our space. Alicia Cobb and Ajani Housen were honored for their dedication to document and enrich our community with their art. Lyrical Voices is lucky to have them as part of our community. DJ Buddha LuvJonz is an original in everything he does and the way his music matches all our moments brings the evening to the next level of beauty. Thanks to Gerald Moore for allowing us to occupy Gallery 1212 for as long as it takes to leave with a clear spirit.
I thank everyone for their motivation and inspiration. I am glad this venue touches lives including my own. If you didn’t come it wouldn’t exist and it’s important to recognize that we celebrate our community. It is bigger than an individual or a group but how we engage the community and share what we know about art and dedication to our passion when we leave the platform.
Your love and support is necessary. The fact that you are so generous with it is the heart beat of Lyrical Voices. Stick with us as we move forward! There is much more to experience.
LOVE.
Shanna
What Is Artistic Discussions? This Saturday will be new and beautiful!I have been watching a lot of youtube and enjoying the many artistic videos on blackartinamerica.com where artists discuss their craft. Poets, painters, singers, dancers, actors, they all give a voice to their art in discussions about their passion, inspiration, motivation, technique, etc. It is so important for an artist to do this throughout our experience because it is only while we are here that we have the opportunity. One day someone else will try to interpret what we do and they might come up with a reasonable yet inaccurate explanation of how our creations arrived. This is our chance to tell the story first hand.

I am certain of 6 discussions with some excellent artists over the next few months and it is going to be powerful. Do not miss this experience and be sure to share this event as much as possible so other people know what we are doing. If you have something you are wondering about when it comes to painting and poetry, mind evolution and myself can tell you what we know. there will be other artists who have great perspectives to add to the discussion as well.

we are looking forward to this time. thank you in advance for your continued support.

love.
Poetry is something I have loved since I was young and Lyrical Voices is something developed out of a necessity to share my art and gather inspiration. While many have explained how they have been helped through this opportunity to listen and share their voice with me; I certainly never took credit for it. I still don’t take credit for this because Lyrical Voices is truly a community effort and my motivation is just as important as your presence and willingness to share your experience through visual art and poetry.

One thing I can say is that it felt good to have our efforts acknowledged. The support in that room was much greater than I imagined. Sitting at that table with my family and friends in full support of these visions I have was affirming. When they called my name and the room rumbled with cheer it was like being hugged with sincere love. That is what I would not trade for the world. There are so many people who walk through life wondering if they are loved or if their efforts are appreciated. There is no question that I feel loved in abundance and I felt that way for a long time. It is not something I take for granted or I expect but it is something that makes me thankful.

So many talented people meet me half way in maintaining these friendships that are so precious. Sometimes I look at you all and give thanks for being gifted for so much support and inspiration. Let’s continue to work and do all we can as artists and members of a community that wants to grow in positivity, creativity, and friendship. We have helped many people through helping ourselves by releasing these thoughts and ideas. I honor us. Thank you for honoring me.

Bridgeport’s Black Pride is very supportive of my work and they have been for a long time. This is another great way that they encourage my work and it means a lot. I never expected an Official Citation from the State of Connecticut and the fact that I was honored among so many great people who make huge contributions from their heart within and beyond this community was amazing. Thanks to Tantra, Chuma, Nathan P, Buddha LuvJonz, Patrice, Suselle, Alicia, Shanika, Shanna D., Aunt Carolyn, Grandmother, Crystal, Cynthia, Gina LeVon Simpson and all the others who took time to share this day with me as well as those who wished to be there and made sure to be present in spirit.

LOVE.
Shanna

<img style="display:block; "It's Madness" Nathan P. Fundraiser Thank You!!! LOVE.LYRICAL VOICES 6 YEAR ANNIVERSARY! THANK YOU!

6 Years! The past year has been triumphant to say the least. Phenix has completed his cd. Many have slammed and won or published their work. Others fell in love, got engaged, married, and pregnant. We watched Xavier evolve from an inability to walk into a walking, recording, creating man in constant motion. Some have pursued their visions of acting. Some have done something simple and complicated (simplicated, as coined by Alicia Cobb) as getting on the mic and saying things they no longer wanted to hold inside. We are constantly touching these visions that we may have once resigned to the role of a dream instead of reality. I say that is worthy of a beautiful celebration!

As a community and as individuals, we have faced many obstacles and there is a beauty in the way we survive them, purge them, and regain our composure so we can come together again. We say, “look where I’ve been, I have survived this, I hurt so much while that happened, check out how I healed with no idea of my possibilities”. We look at the people in front of us and sincerely say, “I haven’t always known I am beautiful, but I discovered it in the mirror this morning. I discovered it in the voice of my child, in the hug of a friend, in a gospel song, in a poem, in the adoration of a lover…I found my beautiful” That is what Lyrical Voices has become, this safe haven for ideas, beliefs, and growth.

I feel blessed to take part in this experience. I don’t know why I was chosen for such a task, but it has helped me blossom as an artist, a friend, and a leader. There has always been a fire in my spirit and Lyrical Voices ignites me each time I step in front of you all and free myself of energy that sometimes gets held onto so tightly it feels like it’s in my blood. It is a great feeling to have a place that reminds you of who you really are when the world makes it so easy to forget.
Happy Anniversary!!!!

Queen GodIs, we thank you for the love and energy you brought into this anniversary. Your words and spirit settle into the bone and we love your light. Ngoma, we honor you with true love and respect. Thank you for all your contributions to this artistic community. Thanks to all the poets who participated in our tribute to poets who came before us, Mind Evolution, Midnight, NuNuu, Frederick Douglass, Croilot, Buddha, and Tantra! It is our job to keep those words alive as I hope someone does our words in the future. NATHAN P FUNDRAISER

Tantra and I spoke on how we can help Nathan P during this rough time and we decided to honor him for a night while raising money to help him with medical expenses as he deals with Lupus. When we put out the call for poets not one hesitated to donate their time, art, and products to create a full evening in celebration of this wonderful man. Queen GodIs worked it out so The B~Hive would donate the space and she helped bring the evening full circle in a way only she could...in a full circle of spirit!!!Thank you for being so supportive and gifting Nathan so much motivation to get better. He is a warrior for us as friends and artists and when he needs us we are showing up. It was humbling to sit in that room among poets who have been for so many years and who hold the same passion for art. Nathan spoke to me about how appreciative he is and I hear the love in his voice. It is an honor to be an artist among such great artists. Let's continue to work and help our brother heal.

If people who were unable to attend want to continue donations they can be sent to...
(checks payable to Nathaniel Pearson, Jr.)
Nathaniel Pearson, Jr.
c/o Diamond and Company (Attention Deb Williams)
444 West 49th Street, #3D
NYC, NY 10019

LOVE.
~Shanna

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLmmBTJWKq3eSV-cVN86x_DZ__I-U1tZa9A80eJuddl_x7c5VlGfi_I1Cv5taIP6jbqPlUJy4jgoevFJHRMpXfnPtje5RrNxN0aPv55Rxwe4Yl0U1ji2wec6iMZgwCwZ3vrICJCaLkJ1A/s320/Nathan+P+fund.+pic1.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561516664787569346" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrfXHw_A9IEgVa496PCk0o03x3jYmhLRp0MTOoJKen5K5Q3KhIgvmuTQCqURqZNEnO0n_zCmLYhu08D0k3C-zo1gpA_hrb1SEUvTDFqQ7bTo51hm6vxCHP2Hy8lkT-1FoI1lzXxX64xqk/s320/Nathan+P+fund.+pic.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561516658521560114" />
(Photo's provided by Baron ~ www.artistbaron.com)Shannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04940417791390887151noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133761993735586350.post-10664500820357864272011-01-04T00:27:00.001-05:002011-01-04T00:29:38.617-05:00Bridgeport Black Pride is honoring me, Shanna Melton, as one of the "Women You Should Know" for 2011!!!Bridgeport Black Pride is honoring me, Shanna Melton, as one of the "Women You Should Know" for 2011. Some exist in the flesh and others in spirit and they guide me toward a better version of myself. Each day they remind me of my possibilities and their expectations and desire to render them proud is what sculpts me into the woman you see, hear, and experience through art. I have a friend who I met through this social medium called Facebook. She lives in the UK and we never shook hands, hugged, or shared eye contact to create a sister bond, we instant messaged our way into the other’s experience. It seems I visit a deep dark midnight blue place more often than I care to admit and she found me in the core of one. She introduced herself and spoke candidly about how my work as an artist has had a positive effect on her life. She is a cancer survivor who has developed it once again and she has been going through chemotherapy. During her treatments she uses my poem “I Am A Poem” as her mantra. When her daughter needs to chill out a while she plays the poem for her and it is the only thing that keeps her calm. I learned this while questioning why I keep trying and for what when so much of the rest of my life seemed to be in shambles. She typed confirmation that my art is my light. She reminds me each day that there is a purpose and my effort is not in vain.

September 25, 2010 marks one year since the transition of Zannette Lewis. In this past year I have witnessed a legacy take its place. We have honored her through poetry, students have gone to college standing on the foundation of her work, she has a holiday in her name, we have regular conversations about what she would think and how we should take action in ways that would make her proud. Stage four cancer didn’t sound like she would not survive when I heard it. I heard that she was on her way to a survival story and we just needed to be present as her support. Even went so far as to imagine her speaking to a room full of people about this miracle she experienced called survival. Even went as far as an attempt to convince her that survival was hers and she would be here to experience the turn around.

This time, I will not let my need for a miracle blind me from the reality of what is happening. I will listen to the truth as it settles into my ears and make sure it doesn’t turn into a hum so that we can experience what time we do have together. Not one minute it took to read this was promised or owed to us, they were all gifted. Life changes in an instant and while I am the first to admit that I rush through many of my moments, I am also the first to admit that I should embrace them all and carry the love filled ones for as long as possible. Love is the only thing we can take with us and leave behind when we transition. The way we speak, support, encourage, and embrace others is what determines our legacy. It is what makes others decide that we should always be remembered. Zannette kicked up a lot of dirt while she was here by making it her mission to educate children, provide platforms for poets to be heard, and read her way into so many hearts. Everyone says rest in peace but I believe she is kicking up clouds in heaven and making sure people have open spirits so they can embrace their new existence.

My sister/friend says she understands that death is a part of life and she is laying this struggle in God’s hands. That is a courageous act of faith that must be respected. I will not fill her head with talk of survival but I will continue to pray for her miracle. She is trying to change the world so her daughter’s have a greater place to exist and the way she loves the people in her life is her legacy. The way she sends love and speaks of her victories while experiencing so much pain makes her a living testimony to how humans are positioned to save each other. Her presence in my life has saved me from that deep dark midnight blue place more times than I can count. The thoughts are blocked by proof that the strokes of our pens and paintbrushes create more than a story, but a reflection for much needed light in dark places.
LOVE.Shannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04940417791390887151noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133761993735586350.post-82466360167725003172010-09-22T20:17:00.004-05:002010-09-22T20:27:45.873-05:00I Adore Montreal, Canada!!!I have gone international baby!!! The accompanying original sound track explores the "blues" which also has deep roots in American history. The music progresses as does the poem/video presentation; from the opening poem by Blis Blis, the mother who is praying for the safe return of her soldier girl, the lover-man longing for his woman back in the states, to the married mother who left her family behind. Soldier Blues, written and performed by Tantra-zawadi, was inspired by poet/musician Xavier Kemp and is a call for America to help our soldiers recover when they return home. Music created by Stevie Gee, Leviticus, Russ Mitkowski and BooBoo Cousins. Art work by Shanna Melton. Video edited by Oliver Covrett, XYAYX Multimedia with choreography by Von Jacobs. Tantra-zawadi, an award winning international poet, recording artist and filmmaker, is a native of Brooklyn, New York.
