Lyrical Voices Review - Happy New Year

The December Lyrical Voices had everyone engaged. We opened our spiritual and literal books and spent the evening open, how wonderful was that!!! I was right about the way Jamaal St. John and Nile Goddess' love for each other would shape the evening, it is so powerful. I am grateful to them for taking the time to drive to Bridgeport, CT from Jersey after work and still give so much of theirselves to the evening.

January holds massive possibilities for Lyrical Voices. MARC MARCEL will feature that evening and bring all that is him specifically to rock our evening. This is that travelling man that Mos Def raps about, he has taken his poetry around the world for real. It is an honor that he plans to bless the space this month. Visit www.marcmarcel.com for more information.

Check out Upcoming events to find out about the next Movie Screening on 1/4, and the next writers group on 1/13, and Lyrical Voices on 1/19.

Happy 2007 everyone, let's hope and pray for joy in abundance this year, many of us need it!!

1love,
Shanna

Movie Screening Review & Thanks To Pankey

Hello Lyrical Voices,

There are times in life when people see your possibilities before you are able to grasp them, and they put a mirror in front of you that reflects a greater version of yourself, that is what Wayne Pankey has done for me. I see my art and I believe it is good because it tells my stories and makes my world a lot more beautiful. As this man made my web site, he allowed me to see how it does the same for other people. He took all the love he has for my art and created a web site I could not have imagined myself. Each time I look into this mirror it seems like my possibilities are endless. It gave me a much greater appreciation for my creativity and how I was put in this world to claim my artistic space. It does not seem right to simply say “thank you”, there are more words and feelings than that would convey. Any artist knows that it is hard to trust someone else with your art, and when they love your art with the same sincerity and respect as you, it is rare and precious. Wayne, your friendship is rare and precious and I would not trade it for anything…anything at all. If anyone wants to contact Wayne for the construction of their web sites, I will connect you with him and he is sure to put time and quality into your site.

The movie screening and discussion was so powerful. We are thankful to all those who attended and made this night so engaging. “The Origins of AIDS” ignited a lot of thought and it was very informative. Self-preservation is the key to getting ahead in this world and we decided that education and motivation are the factors which will move us in a positive direction. I offer prayers to all those who live with HIV or AIDS and to those who have made their transition. It is easy to put this epidemic aside when it is not in your home, or your body, but it is still a reality for so many. We all know someone who has it, even if we are not aware of their status. It is important to encourage and love everyone in our lives so that their tomorrow can be better than yesterday. It is also important that we demand that love in return.

“The Writer’s Group” and “Lyrical Voices” will take place over the next two weeks. I ask that you come out and bring friends. This request does not solely come from a desire for your support; it comes from a desire for our empowerment. It is the idea that we need to free ourselves by letting go of all these thoughts, rhymes, rhythms, dreams, nightmares, wishes, and give them to the world. It is the opportunity to know that we are not alone and nothing we go through originated in us, someone, somewhere, knows and lives our experience. Writing and sharing are what document this truth and we are the only ones who can do it accurately.

Check my calendar at www.poeticsoularts.com for upcoming events. For questions, comments, and concerns, contact, LyricalVoices1@yahoo.com.

Lyrical Voices 2 Year Anniversary Reflections

Hello Lyrical Voices,

Our 2 YEAR ANNIVERSARY was something we should all be so proud of, it was beyond what I imagined. Thanks to everyone for coming out and bringing all that love and unity into the space. It was encouraging to see that Lyrical Voices still means so much to so many people.

Thanks and love to Tantra who hosted with all the peace poetry she has in her, what an honor. It was really important that we bring it back to our foundation for the anniversary and Tantra certainly brought it all home. She also blessed us with a cd for the raffle and that cd is so elegant and thought provoking, it goes beyond the word “gift”. If you were unable to buy her cd at the event, go to www.masterwordplay.com and check her out. Thank you Tantra, for being so motivational in my experience and encouraging so many others, you are a wonderful woman and it is an honor to be in your company.

Buddha, the mix cd is wonderful and everyone loves what you do. You keep me going and all your time and energy is so necessary and appreciated. Happy Birthday 12/1/06.

Sheree, your photography is amazing. The love is present in your work and when you are in Essence and/or one of those huge magazines with major photo spreads, remember that we loved you first.

Gerald and Robin, your opening Gallery 1212 to us is monumental. We have struggled so much in finding venue. The fact that we were able to come together there was really comforting and wonderful. Thank You!!

Thanks to all those who have hosted Lyrical Voices over the past 2 years. Your love and support has given this venue power and changed our artistic community for the better. Also, thanks to all the poets, singers, actors, musicians, painters, and all others who have come from far and near to move our crowd and share their art. Thanks to the community for listening.

Blue

i loved you
before Miles knew blue
before love knew it had songs
i loved you
before creation created the beings
who created us
i had epiphanies of your figure
before it became a reality
and stood before me
some say our meeting was destiny
and i would have to agree
because my love songs begin in me
and end in you
we can make love to Miles Davis’ ”Some Kind of Blue”
as love chuckles at the songs we create
and I could not acknowledge
before I knew I loved you
